SOPA is an acronym for the Stop Online Piracy Act.
It's a law/rule that tries to get rid of all copyright infringement by not letting people be able to get to sites that host or facilitate the trading of pirated content. Rep Lamar Smith is the one behind SOPA.
Most sites you visit regular; YouTube, Craigslist, Wikipedia, etc. are against SOPA. SOPA gives the government all power of what we search, learn, see, and talk about online. The government gets the power to edit anything they want to online. They get to police anything they want online. The SOPA tries to shut down all freedom of social media. For further reading:

“The PROTECT IP Act (Preventing Real Online Threats to Economic Creativity and Theft of Intellectual Property Act, or PIPA) is a proposed law with the stated goal of giving the US government and copyright holders additional tools to curb access to "rogue websites dedicated to the sale of infringing or counterfeit goods", especially those registered outside the U.S. The bill was introduced on May 12, 2011, by Senator Patrick Leahy (D-VT) and 11 bipartisan co-sponsors.”
